The investigation into the suicide of actor Pratyusha Banerjee has come to a near-standstill as her boyfriend Rahul Raj Singh — accused of abetting her suicide — remains in hospital. Meanwhile, Rahul’s former lawyer held a press conference on Friday, at which he made a series of allegations, including that Rahul had lied to the police about his whereabouts on the night of March 31, and had been cheating on Pratyusha with an ex.
On Thursday, the police had collected medic reports from Shree Sai Hospital in Kandivli (E), where Rahul was admitted on April 3 after complaining of severe chest pain. The police are awaiting a reply from a panel of doctors at JJ Hospital, who have been asked to examine Rahul’s medical reports and give their opinion on whether he can be placed under arrest.
The police have recorded 14 statements so far. They hope that questioning Rahul will give them better insight into the sequence of events that led up to the 24-year-old actor’s death.
The police have still not established what caused Pratyusha to commit suicide, and whether she and Rahul had fought on April 1, the day she hanged herself.
Meanwhile, Rahul’s former lawyer Neeraj Gupta held a press conference on Friday, at which he made allegations against Rahul.
“Rahul told police he had a house party on 31st (March) night but in fact he was at a restaurant with a girl until 1.30 am. He had a fight with her. This is clinching evidence against him that he is lying,” Gupta said.
He also alleged that Rahul continued to have relations with his former girlfriend even after they broke up. He also claimed Rahul has cheated several women of their money by claiming he was producing a movie or organising an event.
“The police should investigate if [Pratyusha] was in her senses when committing suicide since she had been drinking alcohol from night till afternoon,” said Gupta, who withdrew from the case on Wednesday, claiming Rahul had not been honest with him and had withheld crucial details of the case.
