After six years of her marriage, Vidya Pednekar was excited to discover that she was pregnant. But her joy was short-lived.
On Friday, four persons, including two women, allegedly beat up Pednekar at Kurla, that led to her miscarriage. Pednekar, who was two months into her pregnancy, was a nurse at the Kurla-based Bhabha hospital, said police. A fight broke out between Vidya and the accused after the latter’s bike brushed past her.
According to Kurla police, the incident took place around 10.30am when Pednekar was heading to Bhabha hospital from her Pereira chawl residence at Sonapur lane in Kurla (West). As she was walking the narrow lane leading to the hospital, a biker from behind brushed past her.
Assistant commissioner of police (Kurla division) Prabhakar Satam said that Pednekar shouted at the biker, Rahul Satpute, 23, who was riding triple seat. Satpute had his sister Shraddha, 18, and mother Rajashree, 40, sitting behind him.
When Pednekar shouted at Satpute, he halted the bike and a verbal fight took place between Pednekar and the Satputes.
“Soon the fight turned physical with both sides pushing each other. Pednekar fell on the ground following which Satpute kicked her in the stomach,” said Satam. Another friend of Satpute, Pappu Kanade, also joined the trio. “The Satputes did not know that she was pregnant,” added Satam.
Locals took Pednekar to Bhabha hospital. “On Saturday, doctors found that because of the injuries she sustained in the fight, Pednekar suffered a miscarriage,” said Satam.
Following this, the Kurla police registered a case under section 316 (causing death of quick unborn child by act amounting to culpable homicide), 323 (Punishment for voluntarily causing hurt), 325 (punishment for voluntarily causing grievous hurt) and 504 (Intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of the peace).
The Kurla police managed to track down Satpute and he was arrested on Tuesday. Police are on the lookout for the other three. Pednekar was still recuperating at the Bhabha hospital on Tuesday.
