Maharashtra Electricity Regulatory Commission has approved of state-owned power company Mahavitaran’s proposal to install pre-paid meters.
While approving it, MERC told the company on Thursday to come out with a foolproof plan at least for a pilot project.
“We appreciate the scheme but want to know which category of consumers will get prepaid meters, and in which regions the project will be initially implemented,” the commission said.
Under the prepaid scheme, Mahavitaran plans to do away with bill recovery system. Consumers opting for this plan will have to buy recharge coupons of a specific amount.
In a way, consumers will be free to use affordable amount of energy. In South Africa, some 33 lakh pre-paid meters are being operated successfully.
Under prepaid metering, existing billing consumers can opt for the new scheme.
