Leader of opposition in the state assembly Eknath Khadse moved a breach of privilege motion against water resources minister Sunil Tatkare on Wednesday for ‘misguiding’ the assembly over the appointment of the special investigation team (SIT), which was constituted to probe the alleged scam in implementation of irrigation projects.
Khadse said the House was informed that the panel would have the right to investigate into the alleged scam, but the terms of references finalised by the government has left the panel led by Madhav Chitale a toothless body.
Khadse said the water resources minister, while announcing the panel in the winter session in December, had said he will abide by the demand made by the opposition.
“The minister has misled and cheated the House and hence I urge the speaker to admit the motion and send it to the committee for further action,” he said.
Khadse said the SIT has ended up being only a “special inquiry team” and not the special investigation team as it has no right to investigate or summon officials or politicians.
He said the SIT was agreed to by the opposition as the government had given in-principle consent to the terms of references demanded by them.
Khadse said, “We had demanded formation of SIT as per the commission of inquiry act and that it be brought under the control of the high court. Neither of the demands have been met.”
