The Goregaon police registered a complaint on Wednesday against Rahul Sarangle, a professor in Patkar College in Goregaon, for allegedly sending lewd text messages to a student.

“Rahul Sarangle, 24, has been booked for outraging the modesty of a woman,” said Surendra Paithankar, senior police inspector, Goregaon police station.

“No arrests have been made in the case as yet. Investigations are still on,” Paithankar added.

Sarangle had allegedly sent messages to a Class 12 student seeking sexual favours after she failed in two papers.

Members of the Yuva Sena protested outside Patkar College on Wednesday afternoon demanding the suspension of the professor.

The Sena also wrote to Rajan Welukar, vice-chancellor of Mumbai University, seeking an inquiry into the matter, and claimed the college had decided to suspend the professor.

However, college principal MB Kenkare could not be contacted for confirmation.

Sarangle has reportedly admitted to sending the messages, which he claimed was to test the student’s character.
