The sexual assault on a transgender in a moving car in Ghatkopar may have been a result of a property dispute, said the police.

Mubarak Shaikh, 35, allegedly had unnatural sex with the 21-year-old transgender in a moving car near Ghatkopar on Tuesday night. He and his two friends singed her with cigarettes and also doused her in kerosene after which they abandoned her. Shaikh was arrested later.

“The victim alleged that Mubarak lived in a one-plus-one structure belonging to her guru. Mubarak claimed that he had purchased the structure from the guru nine years ago for Rs18 lakh. The ownership of the structure had led to animosity between them,” said Subhash Raut, senior police inspector, VB Nagar police station.

Police sources said that they are investigating the veracity of the sequence of events cited by the victim.

An officer said, “Shaikh did not escape after the crime. When our team reached Shaikh’s chicken shop to catch him, he was sitting there oblivious to any such incident. Investigations are on to ascertain the sequence of events.”
