Several commuters were held up at bus stops, railway stations and traffic jams as heavy rain crippled public transport in the city on Friday.

While many people claimed that they had to wade through water-logged roads as autorickshaws and taxis refused rides, others alleged that auto drivers overcharged them. "I was charged Rs40 for sharing an auto from Andheri station to the Infinity mall, which is more than double the normal rates," said Prisilla Nadar, 22, student.

Roads outside busy corporate parks on the Lower Parel-Worli stretch were flooded, leading to massive traffic snarls. "I almost got into a fist fight over hailing a taxi," said Manish Joshi, a media professional, who takes a taxi to Worli from Elphinstone station.

Office-goers also had to wait for a long time at the bus depots as many public transport buses were plying late. "I reached my office late because the bus was behind schedule. And when it came, I could not get in because of the crowd," said Pooja Vanjari, 23, who works in Dombivli.
