An alleged Ravi Pujari gang member was gunned down by officials of the Anti-Extortion Cell of the Mumbai police at Santacruz on Saturday evening.

Rajendra Choudhary, alias Nepali alias Thapa (28), was allegedly a contact killer of the Pujari gang.

“We had received a tip-off that Choudhary was coming to deliver arms to an accomplice near the Rajesh Khanna Garden in Santacruz (W). They were going to narrow down their next target for extortion. We laid a trap and asked him to surrender,” said Deven Bharti, additional commissioner of police (Crime). “But Choudhary fired two rounds at our officers from an Italian-make 9mm pistol. Our officers fired back five rounds and he was killed.”

Choudhary was wanted in the firing case at the Kandivli office of Ekta builders in 2008 in which sections of the MCOCA were applied. Bharti said: “Choudhary was on the run for the last two years. He was involved in a string of firings that included three extortion-related firings in the suburbs.”
