The toll from the inferno at the Central Ammunition Depot (CAD) in Pulgaon has reached 19 after the recovery of three more bodies from the debris.
According to a senior Wardha police officer, three charred bodies were recovered from the accident site late Tuesday night. Two of them were identified as Amol Yesankar and Amit Dandekar, while the third one is yet to be identified.
According to the information available, Amol and Amit were firemen, who had reached the spot to douse off the flames.
Their efforts restricted the fire to just one shed, which contained highly sensitive ammunition, the details of which have not been disclosed. The third one must also be a fireman, a senior police officer said. Army officers, Lt Col RS Pawar and Major Mohan K, who were based at the depot, also died in the blaze. Both the officers were due for transfer this month.
The intensity of the fire and explosions at the depot was such that seven victims were blown to pieces and their body parts were later recovered from the site, an eye witness said.
Dr Sandip Srivastava, the dean of Acharya Vinobha Bhave Medical College and Hospital at Sawangi, said 17 injured people were undergoing treatment at the hospital. Three of them were in the ICU and recovering fast. Most of the patients suffered injuries to the ear drum because of the impact of the blast, Dr Srivastava added.
