Unhappy with the slow progress by the state Crime Investigation Department (CID), the Bombay high court on Monday transferred the investigation into the murder of Pune builder, Nikhil Rane, to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).

A division bench of justice BH Marlapalle and justice UD Salvi transferred the investigation to the CBI observing: “The investigating agency (state CID) has virtually drawn a blank in the last one year. At one point, Ashwini (Rane’s wife) offered a prize of Rs1 crore for the informer. It is under these circumstances that we are left

with no other choice but to hand over the investigation to the CBI.”

The high court asked the commissioner of police (CP), Pune, to provide assistance in terms of manpower.

The CP has been asked to provide an assistant police inspector, a police inspector and two police sub inspectors and constables.

The high court has also asked the Pune CP to extend any other assistance if sought by the CBI.

The high court was hearing a petition filed by Ashwini seeking an independent probe in her husband’s death.

Rane was critically injured on November 23, 2009 when gangsters fired at him from close range. He succumbed to his injuries a week later.

The government had in July 2010, transferred the investigation to the CID.

The petition said the police probe was going nowhere and sought to transfer the case to the CBI. Four people were arrested, but nothing came of their interrogation, the police said.
