In a move to clear the air, the federation of engineers said their fraternity was being vilified by the media and that they were willing to declare their assets online every year.

Maharashtra Abhiyantriki Seva Mahasangh held a press conference on Saturday following the arrests of public works engineers Satish Chiklikar and Jagdish Wagh for accepting bribes, and allegations by BJP leader Kirit Somaiya that engineers had floated companies to gain public works contracts.

“We do not support the wrong doings of engineers like Satish Chikhalikar or Jagdish Wagh. But it’s unfair to hold all engineers responsible for corruption in the department,” said SD Chandsure, secretary of the mahasangh.

The engineers said the government should formulate a policy for online declaration of assets.

“All our employees have declared assets, and we do not mind doing it online. We will request the chief minister to initiate a process for the same,” Chandsure said.

The federation admitted that the provisions in the Maharashtra Civil Service (Conduct and Discipline) Rule 1979 needed to be amended. “The rule states that unless vested interests are involved, there is no prohibition on business by any relative of government employees. But there need to be checks,” said Avinash Thakre, former president of Indian Engineer’s Federation.

He said the organisations were open for investigations of the companies allegedly floated by the engineers working for PWD.
