The local branch of the Public Works Department (PWD) has started demolition of dilapidated structures and cleaning up of the Shakti Mill compound.

After a 22-year-old photojournalist was gangraped in the mill compound in August, the Bombay high court had ordered the authorities to make the place safer by removing weak structures, fencing the boundary walls, appointing security guards to patrol the premises and lighting up the area.

The official liquidator, the custodian of the premises for the past three decades, was asked to chalk out a plan with the help of the BEST, civic body and PWD.

The PWD submitted an estimate of Rs1.5 crore for the work that included demolition of weak walls and other structures, closure of multiple entries, removal of debris and pruning the grass.

“The first phase of removal of debris, cleaning of grass and levelling of surface to ensure the visibility for the security was approved by the court. The estimated expenditure was Rs17 lakh, which has been paid by the liquidator. The work will be completed in two weeks,” said an official from the PWD on the condition of anonymity, as he is not authorised to speak to he media.

“The next phase will be undertaken at a later stage according to the directives from the court,” he added.
