MUMBAI: At least three of the 15 passengers waiting for a train fell in a drain outside Vasai railway station, after the slab covering it caved in on Tuesday.
The incident occurred in front of the middle exit gate on platform number 1 around 9am, when commuters were waiting at the station, which was crowded because of disrupted suburban train services following the derailment at Parel.
Western Railway (WR) claimed only three people suffered injuries, of which one received first aid at the railway station, while commuters took two others to a nearby hospital without approaching the local WR administration. Commuter activists said at least 50 passengers were waiting for a train at the time of the incident.
Owing to the weight of the crowd, the concrete slab on the drain caved in and around 15 people, including a few women, fell into it.Some co-passengers immediately pulled them out.
“The particular spot comes under t he j urisdiction of t he Vasai- Virar municipal corporation,” said a WR spokesperson.
He added they do not have details about the two injured, who are reportedly admitted at some private hospital in the vicinity.
