The Santacruz police on Saturday arrested a 45-year-old railway employee for allegedly raping his colleague.
The police said that the man was extorting money from the 46-year-old victim by threatening to defame her.
The police said Anil Modagil (45) works as an employee with the Western Railway.
“Modagil was arrested and charged with rape and extortion. He has been remanded to the police custody until April 29,” said Senior Inspector Madhukar Choudhary of the Santacruz police station.
The police said Modagil had been sexually abusing the victim since 2007 whenever she was alone at home.
The accused and the victim have been living at the Santacruz (West) railway colony since the past five years.
“Modagil had clicked nude photographs of the victim and would always ask her for physical favours whenever she would be alone at home,” said a police officer, on condition of anonymity for lack of authorisation to talk to the media.
The officer added that Modagil had threatened the victim that he would show her photographs to her husband and other residents if she did not oblige.
The police said Modagil is married with two children, while the victim has a son and her husband is also a railway employee.
“The accused had bought a flat for which he needed money. He extorted Rs 4.50 lakh from the victim over a period of time in instalments,” said Nisar Tamboli, deputy commissioner of police, Crime Branch.
The police said investigations are on and they are verifying the allegations made by the victim.
