Heavy rain claimed five lives in three separate incidents in the past three days.
A six-year-old girl died after falling into an open drain in Parksite area of Vikhroli on Friday. According to the police, the girl, Neha Rai, and her elder sister Gayatri were walking back home from school. However, the girls did not see the open drain.
Neha’s body was found 3km away from the spot, stuck in a net at Gamdevi in Damodar Park.
In another incident, a picnic turned tragic for five friends when two of them drowned in the Chena creek in Kashimira area of Mira Road on Friday evening.
The deceased have been identified as Mangesh Gurav, 31, and Abhijeet Rane, 30, both residents of Pachpakhadi in Thane. Both Gurav and Rane did not know swimming and were swept away by the strong current, the Kashimira police said.
Gurav’s body was pulled out on Saturday afternoon, while the search for Rane is still on.
Gurav’s neighbours said he was the son of former Shiv Sena corporator Vaishali Gurav. He is survived by his wife, who is pregnant.
In the third incident, two youngsters — Sushil Kumar, 21, and Sanjay Bagwe, 24 — were swept away at the Pandavkada falls on Friday evening. Their bodies are yet to be found.
While Kumar, son of a Navy officer, was a resident of Colaba, Bagwe drove a tourist vehicle owned by him.
Kumar was crossing the river when he slipped and got caught in the current. Bagwe reportedly had jumped in to help two boys and a girl, but he too lost his balance.
Their bodies are yet to be traced, the police said.
