A man accused of allegedly raping his 17-year-old daughter tried to escape by jumping off a moving police vehicle at Vakola on Monday. But he fell on his head and died in the hospital.
The Goregaon East police had arrested Ghanshyam Singh (45), on Sunday after his wife lodged a complaint alleging that he had raped their daughter.
“Singh, a habitual drinker, worked at a chemical firm in Goregaon. He had raped his daughter twice and she later confided in her mother,” said a police official.
On Monday, Singh was being taken to the Nagpada Police Hospital in a Bolero.
A constable was seated next to the driver, while the victim and her mother were seated in the middle seat with a woman constable. Singh was seated with a constable on the rear seat. He was handcuffed on one wrist and the constable was holding the other end of the handcuff.
At 9.30pm, when the vehicle was passing by Agripada junction at Vakola, Singh suddenly pulled his hand and the constable lost his grip on the handcuff. Before he could react, Singh opened the rear door of the Bolero and jumped off. But he fell head first on the road and suffered severe head injuries.
“Singh was taken to Cooper Hospital where he died of a fracture to his skull while undergoing treatment. We have taken the statement of the constable who was sitting with Singh,” said senior police inspector Anil Kharade of the Vakola police station.
RE Pawar, additional commissioner of police (north region), said: “The crime branch will conduct an inquiry and take statements of the policemen who were in the vehicle and the accused’s wife and victim.”
