Rape accused were known troublemakers

The two men who abducted and raped the 14-year-old Charkop girl were known troublemakers and would routinely misbehave with girls in the area, local residents have said. Manish Khanolkar, 24, and Kalpesh Parmar, 26, continued to be a nuisance despite several complaints lodged against them with the local police, residents say.

“Khanolkar's uncle was fully aware of his nephew's conduct, but never asked him to behave,” said a member of the victim's family.

So fed were the local residents with the behaviour of the two men that most of them stopped interacting with them and their families. However, this had no effect on Khanolkar and Parmar.

Residents say that there were several petty complaints against the duo, but each time the police came to arrest or warn them, the two would flee.

“We had gone to Khanolkar's house and warned his uncle, with whom he was staying to control Khanolkar, but that did not change anything. Khanolkar continued to misbehave with girls from the locality,” the victim's kin added.

Another resident from the locality said, “We shifted here a few months ago and don't know much about the duo. But we know that they are feared and a cause of nuisance. Hence, we stay away from them.”

Another member from the victim's family suggested that another girl had been sexually exploited by Khanolkar and Parmar. “A certain family shifted out of the locality after their daughter, too, was abducted and returned home only a few days later,” the relative added.

Khanolkar and Parmar were arrested by the crime branch from Goa where they had confined the 14-year-old girl. The victim's medical reports are awaited to ascertain whether she had been sexually abused by the duo during her month-long captivity.
