“Citizens should be careful while hiring domestic servants. Especially in the case of senior citizens, details of the domestic help should be registered with us,” said Sanjay Diwadkar, senior police inspector of Gamdevi police station.

With the increasing incidence of attacks on senior citizens by their domestic servants, the police say that citizens should be proactive about registering their (domestic servant’s) details with the local police station.

Diwadkar also recommended that if senior citizens are alone at home, they should register themselves with the senior citizen helpline.

On Saturday, Janardan Jambore, a domestic servant assaulted his employer Smita Parekh (62).

When contacted, Parekh’s son, Jignesh said that the family had no information about Janardan before hiring him.

Jignesh said that Janardan (20) was recommended by their previous servant. When asked whether they had any details of their previous servant Jignesh said, “The servant before Janardan had been working with us only for 15 days and we did not have his details as well, as he had approached us saying that he knew my aunt’s servant. So we hired him without checking his background. After this incident, I would definitely register my parents with the helpline without wasting a single day,” said Jignesh.
