Two habitual offenders who were recently released from jail were arrested again on Saturday in a housebreaking case at Ghatkopar and stolen goods worth Rs3.30 lakh were recovered from them.
The police cracked the case within 24 hours. Saddam Khan, 22, and Faqruddin Shah, 21, were caught while a third accused, Abdul Kadir, 20, is absconding.
The complainant Laxmilal N Jain, 45, a resident of Ashok Nagar in Ghatkopar had registered a case with the police stating that gold ornaments had been stolen from his flat on Friday night.
“The complainant owns a shop and lives on the first floor of the same building. His family was scheduled to leave for their native place on Saturday and had packed jewellery in a suitcase. Khan and Shah broke the shutter of the shop and reached the first floor where the suitcase was kept. Abdul kept watch outside the shop. The trio slipped out quietly when the family was fast asleep. Their help who sleeps at the shop somehow did not notice the intruders,” said KS Mithbawkar, assistant police inspector from Ghatkopar police station.
The police got suspicious as the housebreaking had taken place a few days after the three accused were released from jail. Khan was released on November 1, Saddam on November 12, while Kadir was given bail on Friday.
“All evidence pointed towards the trio as all had similar cases registered against them at Sakinaka and Ghatkopar. The trio was infamous for committing housebreakings together. We laid a trap and arrested Khan and Shah,” Mithbawkar said.
The police have recovered 16.4 tolas of gold from them. “We are currently grilling the accused and are looking for the third accused. We are investigating whether the accused were involved in other such cases,” Mithbawkar said.
