A complaint from a 21-year-old Kolkata girl Sonali (name changed), who was allegedly forced into prostitution, has triggered an investigation into a much bigger sex racket where 15 girls were brought to the city and forced into prostitution.

The Social Service Branch of the Mumbai police told the Bombay High Court on Tuesday that the people who brought Sonali to the city and forced her into prostitution, had also forced 15 other girls into the flesh trade.

The division bench of Justice Ranjana Desai and Justice Mridula Bhatkar directed the police to expose the racket.

Public prosecutor Poornima Kantharia said the racket was probably active for the past 10 years. “We are trying to dig out its complete history,” she added.

Sonali moved the high court after the Malvani police refused to register her complaint against the people who had forced her into the flesh trade including an alleged pimp, Rajesh Rajput.

On Tuesday, the high court asked the state government to consider Sonali’s rehabilitation. “She has come out of hell, you can understand what she has suffered,” said Justice Desai while seeking details of rehab schemes by the state.

Sonali said she was 12 when a Bangladeshi woman brought her to the city in 2000. After she was sold to Rajput, she was sent to different states serve his customers. She also stated that that Rajput often beat and raped her.
