A 63-year-old retired schoolteacher was allegedly raped at her Marol residence on Saturday. The Powai police on Sunday arrested a 45-year-old man for the crime.
As per the victim’s statement, the incident took place around 1.30pm on Saturday when the accused, a Kandivli resident who works in a Silvassa-based company, came to her flat to deliver a parcel to her.
The accused, who is known to the victim and whose name the police have refused to disclose, called the victim saying he was passing by and checked if he could drop in.
Bajirao Bhosle, senior inspector of Powai police station, said: “She said that as she knew and trusted him, she allowed him into her flat, where she lives alone. The victim was known to the accused through a relative.”
The police said the victim’s husband had passed away two years ago and that her daughter, who works for an international airline, was abroad. Her son lives with his family in Mangalore.
The incident came to light after 6.30pm, when the victim called her daughter and told her that she was feeling dizzy. “Her daughter called her friend, who lives in the same locality, and asked her to help her mother. The friend rushed to the victim’s flat and on finding her disoriented, took her to a private clinic, which sent her to Bombay hospital,” Bhosle said.
“On seeing her condition, the doctors called us and we recorded her statement,” Bhosle said.
Initially, the victim was not willing to register a complaint, but later, she agreed. The police have registered a case under section 376 (rape) of the Indian Penal Code against the accused.
The police arrested the accused from his Kandivli residence. The accused will be presented in court on Monday.
