Two elderly women, were assaulted and robbed in broad daylight, in Kalyan (West) on Monday, making away with gold ornaments weighing 350grams.

Robbers, equipped with weapons, entered Saibaba Chawls, Beturkarpada and assaulted Deubai Damu Pundit, 100, and Sarubai Tukaram Kamatkar, 70. The ornaments they stole had been made for the victims’ granddaughter’s wedding.

Inspector AP. Thorat, Bazaarpeth police station said: The neighbours said the incident took place in the afternoon. Six or seven robbers entered the womens’ home, assaulted them, broke open the cupboard and stole the ornaments.” The other members of the house had gone out for work, he added.

“The robbers seemed to know of the wedding and the ornaments, as they did not touch anything else. We are checking the jail and police records of robbers who were recently released from the jail.

Gajarabai Ghataal, 45, the head of the house said, “I was on the duty when the incidence took place. My relatives rushed to the Sion hospital, instead of registering a police case because to save the lives of the women is important to us.

The women are in the Intensive Care Unit of Sion Hospital. One is in the coma, while the other is unconscious.
