The Central Bureau of Investigation on Monday arrested another Income Tax (I-T) official for her alleged involvement in a Rs 2-crore bribe case in which her senior was arrested last week.

Following investigations in which Additional Commissioner of I-T Sumitra Banerjee (41) and her husband Subrato (45) had been arrested on April 16, the CBI arrested her subordinate, Assistant Commissioner of I-T Anjali Bambole (42).

On Monday, the CBI said it found two more lockers belonging to Banerjee.

They searched the lockers at IDBI Bank and recovered Rs 59 lakh in cash and jewellery worth lakhs.

The CBI has also conducted searches at Banerjee’s residence and found another Rs 6 lakh in cash.

Banerjee owns three plots each at Panvel and Nagpur and a house at Andheri, CBI officials said.

On March 24, Banerjee and Bambole had conducted a survey on a Thane builder for tax evasion.

On April 15, the builder complained to the CBI that Banerjee and Bambole had allegedly demanded a bribe of Rs 2 crore.

Banerjee had threatened to show a tax liability of Rs 25 crore on his firm if he refused to pay the bribe.

The builder claimed he paid two instalments of Rs 10 lakh each on March 24 and March 29. The builder then asked Banerjee to reduce the remaining amount from Rs 1.8 crore to Rs 1.5 crore, which she accepted.

April 16 was fixed as the day to give the remaining bribe amount.

The CBI caught Subrato when he accepted the bribe at Mulund on his wife’s behalf. Subsequently, Banerjee was also arrested.

Bambole had allegedly received Rs 10 lakh from the Rs 2 crore the builder had given Banerjee.
