An unidentified person stole Rs31 lakh from the office of an Andheri-based film producer on Monday night.

On Tuesday morning, Sanjay Lai, managing director of K Sera Sera Production Company, was surprised to find the main door of his office on the fourth floor of Mohit Heights, Andheri (West), unlocked.

On checking, he found that the cash was missing from a box that was kept in his office.

Lai then approached the Amboli police station to register a complaint.

According to the police, Lai and his employees had left the office around 9.30pm on Monday.

“The accused entered the office by breaking open the lock on the main door. He then ransacked the place and made away with the cash that was kept in a box,” said a police officer from Amboli police station on condition of anonymity, as he is not authorised to speak to the media.

The money was in the office as Lai had to make a payment to another party on Tuesday, the officer said.

The police suspect that an insider may be involved in the theft as the accused was well aware that there was cash in the office.

The police are questioning employees of Lai’s company and the persons who had visited the office on Monday. “Somebody must have tipped off the thief about the money being in the office. It can only be a person who is a regular and is well informed about the office whereabouts,” the police officer said.

“We have registered a case of house breaking and theft against an unidentified person. We are also making inquiries with history-sheeters in the area to ascertain if any of them are involved in the crime,” said K Ghamande,

senior inspector, Amboli police station.
