Transport authorities are hopeful that at least 200-300 auto rickshaws in the city will be fitted with electronic meters this weekend.
The Regional Transport Offices (RTOs) will organise special two-day camps in the city to ensure that the drive is completely smoothly. The camps will be held on May 19 and 20.
City rickshaw drivers will be provided with all the technical help required for fitting the meters. Officials claim that they drivers can complete the whole procedure, which will be free of cost, without having to approach any union members. RTO officers will also be present there.
“We will provide all the facilities for auto drivers under one roof at these camps. There, they can buy the electronic meter from a manufacturer, pay the RTO fees, install it and even get it tested instantly,” said a senior transport department official.
It also like that rickshaw drivers will get some cost benefits for the e-meters at the camps. The transport department has requested all e-meter manufactures to offer a discount, in order to attract drivers.
“We have requested manufactures to offer discounts on e-meters as they will also benefit from a large number of buys at the camps,” said an RTO official on the condition of anonymity.
There are more than 1 lakh auto rickshaws in the city and about 6.4 lakh across the state. The state government wants to install e-meters in all auto rickshaws in the city before end of March 2013.
Meanwhile, the transport department has given a deadline of May 31 for rickshaw and taxi drivers, to get their existing e-meters calibrated. This involves changing the reading for minimum fares on the meters, to the current amount. They can do this at any e-meter repair shop.
