The Colaba police were disappointed on Thursday after they realised that there was no CCTV footage of the incident when actor Saif Ali Khan allegedly assaulted Iqbal Sharma, a South African businessman (of Indian origin) at Wasabi, a restaurant at the Taj.

Vinod Sawant, senior inspector, Colaba police station, said the CCTV footage could have helped them establish the truth. “As per the hotel’s customer privacy policy, the restaurant and the rooms are barred from electronic surveillance,” he said.

On Wednesday night, the police arrested Saif and two of his friends on charges of assaulting Sharma and his 68-year-old father-in-law the previous night.

Sawant said though the corridors, lobby, reception, entry and exit points of the hotel were covered under the hotel’s CCTV network, they did not find any footage of Saif or of the complainant coming in or going out of the restaurant. “The hotel authorities said they used the stairs through the Harbour Bar to leave the restaurant, which is located on the first floor,” said Sawant.
