The gun used to fire on gangster Abu Salem in Taloja jail last week was supplied to shooter Devendra Jagtap alias JD by his aide Manoj Lamane on May 2 or 3 during a prison visit.
Sources in the Mumbai crime branch who questioned Lamane on Tuesday said gangster Chhota Shakeel had given JD the contract to kill Salem.
Sources said Lamane had met JD along with a lawyer at Taloja jail. “After the visit, Lamane threw the gun wrapped in a cover over the prison wall and JD hid the weapon in his barrack,” a source said. Lamane allegedly got the weapon from a gun runner near Mulund station on May 1.
Himanshu Roy, joint commissioner of police (crime) said they have arrested Lamane and handed him over to the Navi Mumbai police for further investigation.
Sources said Lamane was a childhood friend of JD and grew up with him in Mulund. “JD was admitted to Chandraganga hospital in Mulund, where Lamane went to visit him,” the source said. It was here that JD asked Lamane to work for him and coordinate with his lawyers, provide tiffin and do other jobs, for which Lamane was to be paid Rs10,000 per month.
After a few days, JD asked Lamane to call a ‘Raju bhai’ based in UAE and tell him he was is need of money for which he was ready to take up any work.
Sources said Raju bhai’s number was given to JD by slain gangster Bharat Nepali.
About five months ago Lamane got a call from Shakeel who enquired about JD. “Lamane spoke to Shakeel five to six times,” the source said.
When Lamane told JD about Shakeel’s call, the latter asked him to get him a mobile phone.
“Two mobile phones were thrown over the wall at Taloja jail on different occasions and JD was in direct contact with Shakeel,” the source said.
JD spoke to Shakeel from April, and on April 29th he was told to kill Salem.
