The Bandra police are finding seasoned criminal Mohammad Ansari, 28, arrested for raping and robbing a Spanish woman in her flat on Perry Cross Road and robbing her on Monday, a tough nut to crack.
“He has remained tightlipped and has not cracked during interrogation, so we have not been able to recover the stolen goods, including the nightclothes of the 27-year-old victim, which Ansari took away,” an officer involved in the investigation said, on condition of anonymity.
The police said they are currently focusing on establishing his involvement in the rape rather than recovering the stolen goods. “While his typical modus operandi and the similarity with the sketch establish his involvement, we will need hard evidence to corroborate those before court,” the officer said.
Previously, when caught, Ansari, who has been involved in 28 cases of theft, would readily confess his crime and surrender the booty, which, officials said, made it easier for him to get bail as the police could then not tell the court that they need his custody for a longer period to recover the stolen goods.
Another officer attributes Ansari’s silence to the fact that being a serial offender he knows admitting to serious charges such as rape and having unnatural sex would make it impossible to get bail.
The police are relying on the identification parade, for which they secured his judicial custody on Wednesday, and forensic evidence to build a strong case against Ansari. “We have sent biological samples from the crime scene and the victim’s body to the forensic laboratory to confirm that it is the accused’s DNA,” the officer said, adding that the Kalina-based Forensic Science Laboratory will take at least one week to submit its report.
On Wednesday, the police sent Ansari to Nagpada police hospital for a report on the nature of the bruises on his hand. The police suspect that he got bruised while entering and leaving the victim’s third-floor flat. “He is one of the few thieves who can climb high buildings using drainage pipes, which gave him away,” the officer said.
A doctor from Nagpada police hospital who tested him said: “We have sent his nail clippings and blood samples for DNA testing to the lab.”
Another officer said Ansari is a drug addict and spends around Rs500 daily on drugs. Sources said he was under the influence of drugs when he raped the foreigner.
In the remand application, the police said Ansari entered the victim’s flat through a window after scaling the drainage pipes and that he raped her at knifepoint and had unnatural sex with her before escaping with belongings worth Rs. 45,400.
