The Manikpur police arrested the sugarcane vendor from Valsad, who along with his younger brother allegedly stabbed head constable Ramesh Kadam (52) 13 times in Vasai on Saturday following a quarrel over the disposal of garbage.
Deepak Chaurasia (22), was arrested on Tuesday near Valsad railway station.
“Following the arrest of his brother Chandan (18), Deepak fled to Valsad. He was in touch over the phone with one of his friends in Mumbai. We took his friend into confidence and accompanied him to Valsad where he was to meet Deepak near the station,” said Police Inspector Ashok Pawar.
The police then laid a trap and arrested Deepak. Both the brothers have been booked for attempt to murder.
Kadam, who underwent an operation at a hospital in Vasai on Sunday, is now stable.
“It was a petty quarrel and the accused did not know the victim was a policeman as he was in plainclothes,” said Deputy Superintendent of Police, Deepak Deoraj of the Vasai division.
