Less than a week after a fatal mishap killed a 14-year-old rider at Mahim Causeway Bridge, a 16-year-old boy died on Thursday night when he crashed his bike into a divider after knocking down a pedestrian at Mahim.

While the pedestrian, Shafiq Rafiq Khan, 45, was seriously injured, the 15-year-old pillion rider sustained minor injuries in the accident.

According to the Mahim police, the accident occurred around 9.15pm near the Living Room store on the south-bound stretch of LJ Road. Ubed Fisal Kirkire, resident of Dargah Street, Mahim, was riding the bike with his friend, Vijay Ashok Salvi, riding pillion.

Police stated that Kirkire lost control of the bike after he hit the pedestrian, following which he crashed into the divider. “Kirkire was riding the bike (MH 01 TA 4800) at a high speed when he knocked down Khan. He then lost control and then crashed into the divider. Kirkire sustained head injuries,” said an officer from Mahim police station.

While Kirkire succumbed to his injuries at Sion hospital, Khan is undergoing treatment, police said.

Salvi escaped with abrasions on his forehead, nose and cheeks. “We have booked the deceased as investigation revealed that the accident occurred as he was driving rashly and negligently,” added the officer.

The incident comes in close succession to the one on Sunday, when Class 9 student Rohit Gupta was killed when he crashed his borrowed motorbike into a divider. The pillion rider, a Class 11 student, had sustained multiple fractures. The police said Gupta was riding without a helmet and was ineligible for a licence.
