After fighting for his life for nearly two weeks, Rueben Fernandes, 28, died while undergoing treatment at the Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital in Andheri (West).
Fernandes is the second victim of a harassment case in Andheri last week. His friend Kenin Sentos was stabbed to death after he and Fernandes got into an argument with an inebriated man harassing their woman friend.
Fernandes, who was admitted to the intensive care unit of the hospital, had sustained serious injuries to his head and had to be operated on. He was declared dead by the doctors on Monday evening, police said.
On October 20, Fernandes and Sentos had gone to Amboli Bar and Restaurant at Caesar Road in Andheri with five other friends, which included three women. After the dinner — and the India-England cricket match being shown on the large screen at the restaurant — the group stepped out to have paan at a shop outside the restaurant.
The main accused, Jitendra Rana, who was under the influence of alcohol, allegedly brushed past one of the women in the group, police said. Agitated by his behaviour, Sentos and Fernandes confronted him, which resulted in a heated argument.
Rana left the spot only to return a few minutes later with around eight men. Rana then removed a knife and stabbed Sentos in the abdomen while the others beat up Fernandes. The gang then fled the scene, the police said.
The two men were rushed to Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital where Sentos was declared dead on arrival. While Sentos was working as a bartender at a five-star hotel, Fernandes was a student.
A case was registered with the DN Nagar police, who arrested Rana and his two accomplices — Sunil Bhoth and Satish Durgaj — early on October 21. One Deepak Tival was caught the next day. All the accused are residents of Valmiki Nagar in Andheri, police said. They have been booked for murder under section 302 of the IPC.
