The police, coast guard and fire department officials stepped up the security around the stranded unmanned merchant vessel, MV Pavit, at Versova beach near Ruia Park on Sunday. The 150-m odd stretch was cordoned off to prevent people from venturing too close to the grounded vessel.

“MV Wisdom provided sufficient training and now we can take care of this ship (MT Pavit),” said Jagdish Mehar, 29, a lifeguard at Juhu beach.

Meher and 21 others have been deployed at the beach to prevent onlookers from getting too close to the vessel. However, keeping people at bay at a popular weekend destination and that too on a holiday proved a taxing job for the lifeguards and the cops.

Mehar recalled the drowning incidents, which were reported when MV Wisdom, was stranded off the Juhu beach. “A few over enthusiastic onlookers would try to get too close to the vessel even though we had asked people to stay away,” said Krishna Mangela, another lifeguard. The tight security, however, disappointed onlookers and photographers, who queued up to catch a glimpse of the ship, on Sunday.
