Kurar police station’s Senior Inspector, Mohan Sankhe, withdrew his anticipatory bail application on Monday after the Special Investigation Team (SIT) probing the alleged fake encounter of suspected Chhota Rajan aide Ram Narayan Gupta alias Lakhan Bhaiyya told the court that it wanted to examine Sankhe as a witness.

Sankhe had filed for anticipatory bail in the sessions court on March 10 apprehending arrest by the SIT in the case in which dismissed encounter specialist, Pradeep Sharma, is the key accused.

Sankhe’s application stated that on November 11, 2006, Police Inspector, Pradeep Suryavanshi, had come to Versova police station and had said that Gupta had opened fire on a police team and the police had retaliated.

According Sankhe, Suryavanshi told him that Gupta had sustained injuries and was being taken to Cooper hospital.

Sankhe’s application states that as he started recording the first information report (FIR) as per Suryavanshi’s narration, the latter’s team informed him that Gupta had died.

Sankhe visited the spot and later recorded statements of two other policemen from Suryavanshi’s team.

Sankhe also said that on November 16, 2006, the investigation was handed over to another officer.

Sankhe said he had no option but to register the FIR and had followed the law.

In the application Sankhe has also said that there is no allegation against him in the entire proceedings prior to the lodging of the FIR.
