The Banerjee family and senior police officials are stunned by the suicide of anti-terrorism squad (ATS) DCP Sanjay Banerjee.
Sources close to the family said the deceased was under work pressure, which drove him to taking the extreme step. The police said they were probing what the trigger point of the incident was.
Soon after the news of his death was broken, his father, AK Banerjee, a retired inspector general of the Maharashtra police, rushed to the city from Pune. Banerjee's body was sent to the Thane Civil Hospital.
Locals at Omkar building near Hiranandani Estate in Thane, where the Banerjees stayed on the third floor, were startled to see the increased traffic of beaconed vehicles in the neighbourhood. Senior officials of Mumbai and Thane police thronged the third floor residence to offer their support to the family. State ATS chief Rakesh Maria, too, visited Banerjee's residence.
Locals said Banerjee was a jovial person and the couple's elder son Arjun, 14, had recently come on a small vacation from his boarding school in Panchagani. While Arjun is a Class 10 student, Banerjee's younger son Ashutosh is a Class 4 student in a Thane school.
