Retail liquor shops, permit rooms and restaurants that serve alcohol will stay open on Friday, September 24.

The government, on Thursday, revoked its decision to observe dry days on the two days – Thursday and Friday – in view of the court verdict on Babri Masjid-Ram Janmabhoomi land dispute. The decision was cancelled immediately after the Supreme Court deferred the verdict by a week.

The state-wide prohibition would have been three days in succession because Wednesday had already been pronounced a dry day to maintain law and order on Ganesh immersion day.

Excise secretary, CS Sangitrao, confirmed the decision. An excise officer said the business fraternity had been informed. “We have publicised the decision through the media. The decision, if not taken, would have caused heavy losses not just to the owners but the state as well.” He said the decision to ban liquor sales on the Babri judgment day would be taken next week.

Bollywood has appealed to people to maintain calm after the Allahabad High Court delivered its judgment. “We appeal to our citizens to stay calm,” film director Madhur Bhandarkar said.

Bollywood personalities like Anil Kapoor, Ajay Devgn, Farhan Akhtar, Ranbir Kapoor, Priyanka Chopra, Sajid Khan, Zayed Khan and Sophie Chaudhary came together to spread the message.

“We have to ensure that the person who leaves his home every day to earn a living returns safely. We should react to the judgment in a positive way,” Akhtar said. “Whatever the verdict, we should respect the judicial system,” Devgn said. “We should show the world that our peace and harmony cannot be disrupted,” Priyanka Chopra said.
