They used to take up jobs as servants in posh buildings to keep a close watch on the affluent residents whom they would later rob.
But their attempt to rob a diamond trader’s flat at Tardeo Tower building failed, thanks to a 17-year-old’s visit to her friend’s house.
Last week, a gang of three robbers were arrested. The police believe the gang was involved in several other cases of robbery, including in a flat in the same building.
On September 12, Payal Sanghvi (17), a student of KC College, was alone at home. Around 4.30 pm, two men came to the house saying they wanted to check the gas meter counting. The duo gagged Sanghvi and snatched her gold necklace. A third robber, standing guard outside the flat saw Ashmi Shah, a friend of Payal’s who stays in a nearby building, coming to the house and alerted the duo.
The three, along with another robber who was standing outside the building, fled the spot.
The police arrested Ramaram Devasi (20), who worked as a servant in the 15th floor apartment of the same building for four years. After questioning Ramaram, the police arrested Karsan Devasi (22) and Vagtaram Devasi (24) on Saturday. A fourth accused, Hemataram Devasi (22), is still at large.
“The police came to know about robbery cases at the house where he used to work as a servant,” said Assistant Inspector M. Dhanawade.
The robbery cases had not come to light as no formal complaint was made about the same, he added.
