Seven more held for assault on journalists

The Mira Road police have arrested seven more employees of the White House orchestra bar in the assault case of two journalists, Santosh Mishra and Shashi Sharma, taking the total number of accused to 13, including the bar’s owner, Ganesh Kamath. They allegedly thrashed Mishra and Sharma with bamboo sticks when they had gone to cover a police raid around 1am on Friday.

The accused were remanded to police custody till July 23.

Earlier, the police arrested six people from the White House Orchestra bar including Kamath. The police suspect that the same people were involved in the murder of journalist Raghavendra Dubey, who went to the police station after Sharma informed him about the assault. “During the investigation, when we found that the owner of another bar killed Dubey along with his employee and friend, we registered a separate case of murder and arrested all the accused” said a police officer.

The local crime branch is investigating the murder case while the Mira Road police is looking into the assault. The complainant said they were beaten by the bar staff in front of the police official. However, the police said that only when they left after the raid, Mishra and Sharma were assaulted by the bar staff.

The superintendent of police, Rajesh Pradhan has directed the police to conduct an internal inquiry.
