Media tycoon Indrani Mukerjea, her former husband Sanjeev Khanna and her driver Shyam Rai, accused of killing her daughter Sheena Bora, are expected to be jointly interrogated on Friday as police widen the probe into the high-profile murder.
Sanjeev Khanna (50), a Kolkata-based businessman, was brought to Mumbai late on Thursday after his arrest a day earlier for his alleged complicity in the murder of Sheena, Indrani’s daughter from an earlier marriage.
Indrani (43), wife of former Star India CEO Peter Mukerjea, and her driver Shyam Manav Manohar Rai are already in police custody in the case that has seen many twists and turns since it first broke earlier this week.
She had all along passed off Sheena as her sister.
Mumbai Police commissioner Rakesh Maria, who interrogated Indrani and her driver on Thursday, is expected to quiz the three jointly to establish the chain of events.
Sheena’s younger brother Mikhail Bora too reached Mumbai from Guwahati on Friday for questioning.
Mikhail, who stays with Indrani’s parents, was earlier questioned in Guwahati on Thursday by a team of Mumbai Police.
According to police, 24-year-old Sheena was killed by the trio on April 24, 2012 though the exact motive for the crime is yet to be established.
Police said Sheena’s affair with Rahul, Peter Mukerjea’s son from his earlier marriage, could be a motive for the crime as Indrani did not approve of the relationship. Police questioned Rahul for around eight hours on Thursday.
Sources said investigators are pursuing several lines of inquiry, including the possibility of a financial dispute, an honour killing or fears of Sheena exposing her real relationship with Indrani.
Police sources said Khanna was taken to Khar police station, where Indrani and her driver are being held.
Mumbai Police, who obtained a five-day transit remand for Khanna from a court in Kolkata, are expected to produce him in the Bandra metropolitan magistrate’s court later on Friday.
Khanna, according to police officials, came to Mumbai on April 24, 2012 and stayed at Hilltop Hotel in the plush Worli area. They said he is the person who allegedly strangled Sheena inside Indrani’s car.
Officials close to the investigation have said Khanna was named by Indrani’s driver after he was arrested for illegal possession of a 7.65mm pistol.
According to reports, Indrani told police officials it was Khanna who strangled and killed Sheena.
According to the driver’s confession – which is not admissible in court – Sheena’s body was burnt and disposed of in a forested area in Raigad district of Maharashtra, 110 km from Mumbai.
Mumbai Police are also probing the assets accumulated by Khanna, including a house at Howrah in West Bengal from Indrani, which he seemingly got after Sheena’s murder.
