The robbery at HDFC Bank in Shimpoli, Borivli (West), was carried out so smoothly and so quickly on Monday morning that people in the shops next to the bank did not realise anything was amiss until the police reached to the spot.
There are three shops next to the bank that sell eyewear, cigarettes and hardware, only one of which had not opened for the day.
"My shop was open since 7.30 am. The bank employees came in and started work in front of us. But nothing seemed suspicious or unusual," said Mukesh, from the Ganpat Pan Masala shop. "We found out about the robbery only after the police vans came outside the bank and the area was sealed," he added.
A shop attendant said the bank cannot be seen from inside the shop.
"But if there had been a noise, we would have realised something was wrong," he said, refusing to be identified.
A worker at the hardware store said he was cleaning the shop when he noticed that the bank employees were looking worried.
"But I did not realise there was a robbery until the police came and questioned us to find out if we had noticed anything," he added.
