Mumbai’s party scene will turn down the volume this weekend as German artistes perform at silent concerts on Friday and Saturday as part of the electronic music festival at the ongoing Indo-German Urban Mela at Cross Maidan, Marine Lines.

Silent concerts, where people listen to music through headphones, have picked up steam around the world, and are becoming popular in Mumbai as well. “We wanted to conduct a concert during our 10-day event, and since Cross Maidan falls under a ‘silent zone’, a silent concert was the best idea,” said Robin Mallick, an organisers of the inter-cultural event that began on April 13 and will conclude on Sunday.

Leading music producers from Germany will introduce Mumbaiites to their local electronic music. DJ Daniel Haaksman performed at a silent concert on Friday night, while DJ Ada, from Hamburg, Germany, will sway the crowds on Saturday. “The last silent concert I performed at was a smaller event, and the organisers here told me that they have arranged for about 400 headphones. The thought is both scary and exciting,” said DJ Ada.

“I will be playing a diverse set of music, and it will mostly be electronic club music that people can dance to,” said Ada, who likes Bollywood music and finds it “friendly and positive”.
