Playback singer Toshi Sabri, who gained popularity after participating in a reality show, sustained multiple injuries when the car his band was travelling in met with an accident near Shirdi on Wednesday morning.
Abdul Atik, a member of Sabri’s band, died in the accident.
The band was returning from Shirdi, where it performed on Tuesday, when a truck hit their car at Sinnar on the Pune-Nashik highway.
The Sinnar police said there were other people travelling with Sabri in the car.
Sabri’s friend, Rajesh Banga said: “One of the band members, Abdul Atik, died while other two others, Prashant Kumar and Farid [last name not known] have sustained injuries.”
The driver of the car, who was also injured, and Sabri’s two other band mates were admitted to different hospitals in Nashik.
Sabri suffered multiple fractures, including one on his hip, and was reported to be critical. Doctors at Wockhard hospital in Nashik said Sabri is in the intensive care unit. “He is undergoing hip surgery. He was under observation all day,” Dr Wahida Bagwan said on Wednesday night.
The communications in charge at Wockhardt hospital said Atik died before he was brought to the hospital.
“I was in Mumbai when I got to know that my brother has had an accident. Toshi is in a critical condition,” the singer’s brother, Sharib, told PTI.
Toshi is known for his hit single “Mahi Mahi” from the film Raaz 2 The Mystery Continues. The Sabri brothers have also composed music for other Hindi films.
Toshi, a native of Rajasthan, has had a tough time in Mumbai. He was stabbed by unidentified men, who also hit him on his head with a hammer, in Andheri in 2008, soon after he became popular as a reality show contestant.
