The Thane Police arrested six persons, on Friday for attacking a Kalyan jail official.

The accused are history-sheeters and had reportedly beaten up Adharwaadi jailor Naushad Sheikh (41) on February 13 at the behest of a prison inmate.

Four assailants with cricket stumps, bats and iron rods, allegedly attacked Sheikh while he was on his way to the jail from his home. The police managed to trace the Maruti car that the assailants used.

“The car was traced to Kherwadi in Bandra. We detained a few suspicious persons. On interrogation, they revealed the attack was carried out by Dilip Verma (28) alias Bunty of the Santosh Shetty gang . We arrested Bunty and his aid Deepak Rajani (22) from Kalyan,” said Additional Commissioner of police (crime) Prashant Burde.

It was when the police interrogated Bunty that they came to know that someone inside the jail planned the attack.

“Bunty knew Sachin Yadavde, who is currently at Adharwadi jail. Yadavde was angry at not being allowed to visit other prisoners’ barracks. Yadavde had reportedly told Bunty to teach Sheikh a lesson,” said Burde.

The accused were produced in court on Saturday and have been remanded to police custody till February 24.
