The police arrested six people for allegedly kidnapping a three-year-old daughter of a construction labourer.

The girl, Beauty, was rescued from Bhiwandi on Wednesday.

Two out of the five people bought the victim from the other three, who had kidnapped the girl, for Rs 3,000.

The arrested are Sumed Shaikh (22), Farooq Shaikh (22), Maya Khatun (19), Tahima Khatun (25) and brothers Jamal Mullah (32), Nisar Sheikh (30). Sumed, Farooq and Khatun were arrested from Kalyan station, while the three brothers were arrested from Dombivli.

Beauty’s father Shafiq Mohamed Abid Shaikh (22) works at a construction site in Andheri (West) along with Kalu, Farooq and Khatun.

On Monday, Shafiq left his daughter with a woman who takes care of labourers’ children. In the evening, the trio came and took Beauty with them, informing the caretaker that her father was busy and had asked them to take the girl home.

As the caretaker knew the three men as labourers, she did not suspect any foul play. Later, the girl’s father came asking for his daughter but was shocked to know that the trio had taken her without telling him.

“Shafiq called them on their mobile phone and asked them where they had taken Beauty. They said that they took her for an outing near Bombay Central because she was crying. They assured the complainant that they would return soon,” said Police Sub-Inspector Udhav Rajge. “When Shafiq called them a few hours later, their phone was switched off.”

The police traced the accused to Kalyan station by tracking their cell phone numbers and arrested the trio on Wednesday. The trio said they had sold girl to the Mullah brothers and Tahima, who stays with them. The trio was arrested and the girl was rescued.
