The crime branch on Tuesday arrested six people in connection with the kidnapping and murder of a builder, Nitin Dhakan, 46. After the murder, the accused allegedly shopped using Dhakan’s debit card and even stole cash from his house. The six arrested are Gopal Pande, 45, Brajesh Mishra, 33, Abhijit Bhosale, 24, Birbal Singh, 37, Haroon Sheikh, 35, and Sachin Chorge, 28.

Inspector Raghunath Dalvi said the accused kidnapped Dhakan after a land deal they were involved in fell through. “They kidnapped, beat Dhakan to death and burned the body in the forests near Kelve Road (close to Virar),” police said.

Dalvi said Dhakan was to buy a plot at Sai Baba Nagar in Borivli for which Pande was the middleman. “Dhakan paid Pande an initial amount of Rs1.11 lakh but backed off from the deal when he found some problem with the papers,” the officers said.

Police said Pande, after kidnapping Dhakan, told him he had not just wasted three months of his (Pande’s) time but also caused him a loss of more than Rs1 crore.

Police said Dhakan was kidnapped on April 30 and Dhakan’s brother Kishorebhai registered a case of kidnapping at Borivli police station. When the police went through call records on Dhakan’s cell phone they found Pande’s number. Police found that on April 30, Pande had called Dhakan and after the kidnapping his cell phone location showed Virar.

The crime branch then picked up Pande and interrogated him, when he confessed to the crime. “After the murder, the accused bought new shirts using Dhakan’s debit card as their clothes had been spoiled during the murder,” police said. After this, Pande and another accused went to Dhakan’s house and stole Rs45,000.
