A six-year-old girl from Govandi was abducted and raped by an unidentified man between Sunday night and Monday morning. The victim, a Class 2 student, had been reported missing from near her residence at 9.30pm on Sunday night, and was found walking towards her home on Monday morning around 6.30am. Medical tests indicated that she had been raped. She was in shock and could not tell the police about the accused or where he had taken her.
The girl, and her maternal grandmother, had gone to fill water at a tap near their house at around 9.15pm on Sunday.
"As they were waiting in the queue, a man, 20-25 years old, struck up a conversation with the grandmother," said RS Agarwal, senior inspector, Shivaji Nagar police station. The man was lean, and dressed in a green shirt and a pair of black pants. He claimed to live in her neighbourhood. They continued talking till it was her turn to fill water.
"She was carrying two buckets, and after filling one bucket, she went home to keep it. She told the suspect to take care of her granddaughter until she returned. When she came back 10 minutes later, both her granddaughter and the suspect were missing," added Agarwal. She asked those in the queue about the two, but no one knew where they had gone. When she could not be found after more than an hour, a kidnapping case was registered at Shivaji Nagar police station. Police, and additional state reserve police force (SRPF) staff, combed the area all night but could not find her.
Around 6.30am, while the search was still on, she was found walking towards her home. "She appeared shell-shocked. We decided to record her statement later," said S Dalvi, assistant inspector, Shivaji Nagar police station. "We have prepared a sketch of the accused based on the grandmother's description."
Meanwhile, Sagar Raorane, 23, was arrested by Bhandup police for allegedly raping a 14-year-old girl three days ago. He was a friend of the victim's and had allegedly taken her to a hotel, where he raped her, senior police inspector Shrirang Nadgauda of Bhandup police station said. Bhandup police arrested the accused, a school dropout, on Monday after the victim's parents approached them.
