A 26-year-old man, Imtiaz Abdul Siddiqui, was killed after a major portion of a building in Pydhonie collapsed on Friday evening.
Repair work was on at the five-storey Khatija building on Narayan Dhuru Street. At about 5pm, the ceiling of the fourth floor collapsed, taking entire sections of all the lower floors down with it.
Two others were injured in the incident and rushed to JJ hospital for treatment. Officials from the Mumbai Fire Brigade said rescue operations were still on.
“Three people were pulled out from under the debris, all in critical conditions. One of them was declared dead at the hospital,” said a fire brigade official.
“One more person is reportedly still trapped under the rubble. Rescue operations will continue through the night.”
Debris also came crashing down on a restaurant called Burhani, which is run on the ground floor of the building.
Residents blamed lack of adequate precautions before the construction work commenced for the mishap.
“A huge amount of construction material was piled up on the fourth floor, which caused a portion of the building to collapse.
"Thankfully, the building was not occupied by residents as major repair or reconstruction work was going on,” said Amir Idrisi, president of Association of Muslim Professionals, who was present at the spot at the time. “However, there were people at the restaurant.”
While officials confirmed that the building was not occupied, they said it was yet to be ascertained whether the casualties were labourers or if they were employees and customers of the restaurant.
