The Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) demolished a slum colony near Four Points by Sheraton hotel in Vashi on Friday. The Indian and Australian cricket teams will stay at the hotel before their final match on November 11. NMMC has denied any connection between the two.

Around 60 of the 80 hutments at Sector 30A of Vashi, situated close to Vashi station and next to the hotel, was demolished. The slumdwellers claimed that they had been living there for years. Local corporator Dashrath Bhagat tried to stop the demolition, but the officials went ahead with it.

The slumdwellers claimed that they had been living there for over 10 years. Maruti Gawale, a resident, said, “We have all residential proofs. Now, because the teams are coming we have been evicted.”

The slumdwellers said they had not been given any notice of demolition.

Opposing the demolition, Bhagat said, “These slumdwellers have been here for years. How come NMMC never had a problem with it earlier?”

“Obviously, NMMC did not want slums near the hotel as it would not be good for the image of the city. But there is a proper procedure to be followed.”

NMMC denied the allegations. Ward officer Ashok Madhvi said, “Our action has nothing to do with the teams staying at the hotel. The demolition is at some distance from the hotel and not in its path. These were recent encroachments.”
