Soon, retailers are likely to levy a charge if you ask them for a plastic carry bag. Acting on the directions from the Centre, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has proposed Rs2, Rs4 , Rs6 and Rs8 as the minimum rate (depending on the size of the bag).
A notification came into effect from April last year, which mentioned that no plastic bag must be given for free and that the local authority must fix a minimum price for a plastic bag. This is what has prompted the civic body to now fix the price.
The rule will be applicable to all shops in the city, including kirana stores and vegetable vendors. Malls and big showrooms have already started charging for plastic carry bags on voluntary basis.
“These are the minimum proposed rates. Shops are free to charge more. Once the rule is notified it will come to effect. The idea is to discourage people from using plastic carry bags,” said additional municipal commissioner Mohan Adtani.
