In a bid to assist the process of investigation, the police department plans to store the fingerprint records of 95 lakh criminals in the state on a central server within two months.
According to the plan, all police stations in the state and at those at the district level will be given laptops so that they can feed the fingerprint from the crime scene.
Within 15 minutes, the central server at the Criminal Investigation Department ( CID), Pune, would help them in identifying any person with a criminal record. Currently, such a system is in place at Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka.
The new set-up will connect all city and district units of the state police including Mumbai, Thane and Navi Mumbai.
While the director general of police's (DGP) office will issue tenders for the required machinery, the CID will handle the technical evaluation of the system, said sources.
There have been instances where a gang commits a crime in a particular area and takes shelter in a different part of the state.
With centralised fingerprint data, recognising such criminals would become easy.
In 2004, the state Criminal Investigation Department (CID) had spent around Rs3 crore on the project, but the quality remained poor.
The fingerprints did not match 80% of the times. Later, the contract of the company maintaining the fingerprinting machines expired and the officials switched over to the manual process.
SP Yadav, additional director general of police (CID), said the process of issuing new tenders was on and three companies had given presentations to the CID.
“The system is likely to be in place within the next two months,” he said.
