After laptops and official email ids, city corporators may soon get a software that will provide them with all data pertaining to their respective ward on the click on a button.
The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation’s information technology (IT) department is checking how the software can be developed. Once finished, it will include details of each ward, important roads, flood-prone areas and other important data.
“We are still in talks with the elected representatives as to what their requirements are,” said a civic official from the IT department.
Sunil Prabhu, leader of the house who demanded this software, said it would make things easier for corporators. “We have to call up civic officials for every small detail. With the help of this software, we will have access to accurate data,” he said.
Also, it would be handy while conducting meetings as the corporators would know the amount of resources available in their ward and the areas in which there are deficiencies.
However, the IT department is concerned about the success rate of the initiative. “It’s almost two months since official email addresses were given to all corporators. Till date over 90% have not even logged in once,” said an official on condition of anonymity.
Also, the laptops given to the elected representative as Diwali gift in 2009 are not being used.
The aim of going hi-tech was to reduce paper work as agendas of meetings could be sent to them through email, he said.
